Christian IV's Brewery

Christian IV’s Brewery is one of Copenhagen’s oldest buildings and has been closed for the public for more than 400 years. Now, it is open.

The building stands alone in the middle of the historical surroundings around Frederiksholm Canal right on Copenhagen Harbour.

Although the building is best known as a brewery, it was originally built by Christian IV as part of Copenhagen’s military fortifications.

The arched first floor with its stone ceiling is by and large as it was in Christian IV’s time and, today, you can clearly see traces of the building’s military past in the sharp angle that the enormous outer walls form against the harbour and Frederiksholm Canal.

Above, the impressive roof construction rises with its five attic floors where timber structures, beams and posts are fully visible.
