Before the making of Torvegade-Søndervigvej in the end of the 1950s, all traffic to Holmsland and Søndervig went through Vester Strandgade, down around the Harbour and through Vester Strandsbjerg. It is still a good business street with mix of old and newer buildings. As a connection between the Harbour and the Square there have always been pubs in the street.

In Vestergade there have been schools and an iron foundry. Vestergade 3 is the childhood home of Greenland traveller Mylius-Erichsen. A small memorial plaque in Greenland marble on the wall. The northern extensions with cosy small houses leads to the cementery, which was taken into use in 1807.
