Half an hour from Copenhagen lies Roskilde - A city of both kings and Vikings. Its cathedral is the final resting place of no less than 38 Danish monarchs.
It was the easy access to a natural harbour at the end of the fjord that led the Vikings to establish a town and commercial centre here, and this is borne out by the discovery of five Viking ships in the fjord, which can now be seen in the famous Viking Ship Museum.
At the museum there are workshops and conservation projects, ongoing reconstructions of Viking ships and the possibility of going sailing on the fjord in a copy of an original Viking longboat.
Roskilde has a pedestrian street running down the center of the city, with many shops, restaurants, and cafees. Several tourist attractions in the city draw visitors from around Denmark and the world.
Other than the cathedral, which attend more than 125.000 visitors a year, Roskilde is also the city where 100.000+ music lovers come every summer for Roskilde Festival. Roskilde Festival is among the biggest of its kind in Europe. During the festival the population in Roskilde rises with more than 200 percent.
