A giant boulder with traces from the Bronze Age

In the gently rolling landscape between Klovby and Værslev in Kalundborg Municipality, you will find Gubbestenen — one of the most impressive erratic boulders in West Zealand. This massive stone was carried here by glaciers during the last Ice Age and has remained freely in the terrain ever since. With its numerous cup marks, small depressions carved into the surface during the Bronze Age, Gubbestenen bears witness to millennia of human presence in this corner of Denmark.

Cup marks and ritual traces

The stone contains approximately twenty larger and numerous smaller cup-shaped depressions. Cup marks are among the most widespread types of rock carvings in Scandinavia, typically dating from the Bronze Age, roughly 1800-500 BC. Researchers have long debated their significance — some interpret them as fertility symbols, others as sacrificial sites where fat or blood was poured into the depressions. Regardless of interpretation, the many cup marks on Gubbestenen testify that the stone held special ritual significance for the people who lived in the area several thousand years ago.
