A Medieval Castle Mound by Skarresø in Kalundborg Municipality

Skarresholm Castle Mound lies north of Skarresø near Jyderup in Kalundborg Municipality, where the remains of a medieval fortress hide in the rolling landscape between forest and lake. The castle mound is one of the best preserved of its kind in West Zealand and bears witness to the power and influence that once shaped the area around the beautiful Skarresø.

The castle at Skarresholm was established in the Middle Ages, probably in the 13th century, when various feudal lords and noble families built fortified estates across the region. The mound consists of a raised platform surrounded by moats, and although the actual castle buildings have long since vanished, the earthworks still stand prominently in the landscape. From here, the lord of the castle controlled traffic along the roads between Kalundborg and eastern Zealand.

The Landscape Around the Castle Mound

The area surrounding Skarresholm is shaped by the dramatic Ice Age landscape that also created Skarresø. Hills and valleys alternate with woodland and open fields, and from the highest point of the mound there are views across the surrounding terrain — a position that was strategically vital for medieval castle lords. The undulating landscape makes the walk to the castle mound an experience in itself, and you quickly sense why this particular spot was chosen for a fortification.

The woodlands around Skarresø are rich in wildlife including roe deer, foxes and a varied birdlife. The lake itself is surrounded by deciduous forest and ancient trees, and the trail network in the area connects the castle mound with other points of interest along the shores of Skarresø.

History and Archaeology

Skarresholm appears in historical sources from the Middle Ages and has belonged to various owners through the centuries. The castle mound is protected as a scheduled ancient monument and bears witness to a time when West Zealand was densely dotted with small castles and fortified farms. Archaeological investigations have uncovered traces of settlement and daily life that provide insight into medieval society in the region.

The castle mound is freely accessible year-round and can be visited independently. There are no facilities on site, so bring water and perhaps a packed lunch. The terrain can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
