Slagelse Lystskov — A Forest Walk Just Around the Corner

Slagelse Lystskov is the westernmost part of one of Denmark's largest continuous forest areas, stretching from the outskirts of Slagelse eastward into Sorø Municipality. Together, the Slagelseskovene cover an area of around 39 square kilometres, and the Lystskov is the section closest to town. That makes it a natural excursion destination for anyone living in or visiting Slagelse — a forest you can reach on foot in twenty minutes from the town centre.

Ancient Deciduous Woodland with Soul and History

The forest area has been wooded for over 300 years, and you can feel it as you walk beneath the old beech and oak trees. The Lystskov is primarily a deciduous forest with beech as the dominant species, though there are also sections of coniferous forest and open clearings that break up the dense canopy. The soil consists mainly of clay moraine from the last ice age, and it is this soil type that gives the forest its lush character with dense undergrowth and a rich fungi life in autumn.

Studentersøen and Lodmosen

Hidden within the Lystskov are several forest lakes and wetland areas that add an extra dimension to the landscape. Studentersøen is the largest of the lakes and is surrounded by old beech, oak and alder trees that reflect in the still water. The lake is known for its carp fishing and is a peaceful spot where you can sit on a bench and enjoy the quiet. Lodmosen is a nutrient-poor peat bog with downy birch and a number of rare plant species that thrive in the moist, acidic environment — including round-leaved sundew, cranberry and hare's-tail cottongrass. For those with a botanical interest, the bog is a small hidden treasure.

Wildlife in the Depths of the Forest

The size of the Slagelseskovene provides space for a rich and varied wildlife. Fallow deer can be spotted with a bit of luck in the forest clearings, and squirrels leap between the trees in the older stands. Among the birds, you find common buzzard and sparrowhawk as raptors, while raven, woodcock, great spotted woodpecker and tawny owl are also among the forest's permanent residents. In the wetter parts of the forest, several amphibian species live, including tree frog, moor frog and great crested newt. The rare and protected dormouse also has a population in the forest area — a sign that the forest offers the diversity of habitats that discerning species require.

Hiking Trails and Path Networks

The Lystskov is criss-crossed by a network of paths and forest roads that make it easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. The terrain is predominantly flat to gently undulating, and most routes are suitable for families with children and pushchairs. Several marked hiking routes lead through the forest's different sections — from the dark beech groves to the open meadows and the damp peatland areas. Tables and benches are found at Studentersøen and other spots throughout the forest, so you can pack a picnic and make the outing a full-day affair.

Experiences near Slagelse Lystskov

The town of Slagelse sits right next to the forest and offers a wide range of experiences. The historic town centre with St Peter's Church and the lively marketplace are within easy reach, and Trelleborg — the iconic Viking ring fortress — lies just a few kilometres to the west. Eastward, the forest area continues into Sorø Municipality, where Sorø Academy and Sorø Lake offer culture and nature in beautiful combination. The entire area between Slagelse and Sorø is infused with green nature and historical traces, making it an ideal base for exploration.
