In our great-grandparents’ wheel tracks – Discover Bornholm before cars took over
Step back to a time when horses and carts were part of everyday life on Bornholm. At Vognporten in Østerlars, you can explore historic horse-drawn vehicles and gain an insight into life, work and transport before engines truly took over.
Vognporten is housed in an outbuilding at Dybdal, Bornholm’s oldest dairy. The collection tells the story of a time when horses and cows played a central role in both farming and everyday life, and transport moved at a very different pace from today.
When horses became essential again
Part of the story focuses on the occupation of Bornholm, when gasoline shortages meant that horse-drawn vehicles once again played an important role in transport and farming.
Historic carts and carriages, photographs and audio recordings offer an insight into how earlier generations lived and worked. In the film room, you can also watch Østermariefilmen from 1953, which provides a glimpse of life on Bornholm in the postwar years.
A journey through time for children and adults alike
Vognporten is also a place where children can discover history through activities and tasks. During the school summer vacation, special activity days feature drawing, sensory exploration and tasks that encourage children to explore the carts and carriages.
Groups can book guided tours, with visits tailored to participants’ interests.
Vognporten is located at Nybrovej 19 in Østerlars. Visit Vognporten’s own website for current opening hours, activities and guided tour options.
