Stay in the atmospheric Bidstrup Forests

Here you will find Avnstrup Shelter – an ideal choice for those seeking genuine nature experiences combined with generous space and well-considered accessible design. Here, you stay overnight at the edge of the forest with views across meadows and a lake, surrounded by tranquillity, birdsong and forest life.

The shelter is large and spacious, with sleeping space for 10–12 people, and is perfectly suited for families, groups, institutions and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a comfortable and accessible base in nature. The area is clear and easy to move around in, even for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility.

The shelter is connected to a solid campfire house where people naturally gather. Here you will find a cosy fire pit with a grill as well as benches along the walls, designed so that wheelchair users can move right up to the seating area. This makes it easy for everyone to take part in cooking, socialising and long evenings around the fire, regardless of physical ability.

Inside the shelter itself, two ceiling-mounted rails have been installed, making it possible for visitors with reduced mobility to access the sleeping platforms (sails for the system must be brought by the user). In addition, there are fittings for hanging hammocks if you prefer an alternative and relaxing way to stay overnight.

Booking

Avnstrup Shelter can be booked via udinaturen.dk by using the booking button above. Use of the shelter is free of charge, and booking is not mandatory. Overnight stays operate on a first come, first served basis, but a booking gives priority and is recommended if you want to be sure of securing a place.

Getting there

Access to the shelter is straightforward. Parking is available approximately 200 metres away at the Danish Nature Agency’s large car park: Heide Overdrev, Avnstrupvej 22, 4330 Hvalsø – just after Avnstrup Centre. From here, a short and easy walk through the forest leads you to the shelter.

Routes and experiences nearby

Avnstrup Shelter is ideally located for both walkers and cyclists and makes a convenient stop on several of Zealand’s well-known routes:

  • The Monks’ Route, cycle route 88, passes directly by the shelter
  • The Ice Age Route, cycle route 44, is approximately 900 metres away along Avnsøvej
  • The Skjoldung Trail can be accessed about 900 metres from the shelter near Avnsø
  • The Danish Pilgrim Route is approximately 700 metres away along Hundemosevej and Vestre Sanatorievej

The Bidstrup Forests are known for their varied and gently hilly landscape with woodland, lakes, forest meadows and wetlands, as well as rich wildlife and plant life. The area is ideal for both short, peaceful walks and longer day stages – before, during or after your overnight stay at the shelter.

Avnstrup Shelter is a place where nature is accessible to everyone, and where inclusivity, community and outdoor experiences go hand in hand.
