Art, politics and historical change
Through more than 70 works from the prestigious collection in Berlin, the exhibition paints a dramatic portrait of Germany's artistic development from the final years of the German Empire to the end of the Second World War.
Selected works provide insight into movements such as Expressionism, Neue Sachlichkeit and abstraction, creating a visual dialogue between artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Dix and Karl Hofer.
Themes such as power, freedom and oppression are explored: political unrest is reflected in the form of art – both expressive and figurative – and viewers are invited to reflect on the role of art in a society undergoing drastic change.
