Martinus Rørbye has often been called the first Skagen painter, even though he is not considered one of the Skagen painters from the late 19th century. He lived before the artist colony in Skagen, but was the first recognised painter to travel to the area and depict the landscape, life and shipwrecks on the coast. His works inspired later artists to seek out Skagen.

In 2023, one of Rørbye's paintings was sold to the Louvre Museum in Paris amid great media attention. The painting depicts the wreck of the Ann of Sunderland on the beach at Skagen, but the image tells only part of the story of the dramatic shipwreck.

The rest of the story unfolds in this evening lecture, where the curator of the Coastal Museum, Jens Thidemann, talks about Martinus Rørbye's travels to North Jutland, his artistic work and his special relationship with the shipwrecks that came to play a central role in his works.

Tickets can be purchased at the Coastal Museum Skagen or online via Kystmuseet.dk.
