Architecture

The floors are made of reclaimed wood, and cooling is provided mechanically using electricity from 700 m² of rooftop solar panels. All furnishings, walls, and ceilings are sound-absorbing; excess heat is converted into district heating for local homes, and food waste from the canteen is turned into natural gas.

The building’s architecture is spectacular from the outside, and inside, you can experience the work of one of our major contemporary artists.

Hanging here is the five-meter-long brass mobile, *The Whale’s Heart* (Hvalens Hjerte). It moves slowly and silently, reflecting the light from the large window section.

The mobile was created by artist Kirstine Roepstorff. She describes the piece as a reminder of the elements that surround us and the proportions of which we are a part.
*The Whale’s Heart* beats for connections, laughter, delight, persistence, and coordination. It represents the willingness to let moments unfold and the joy of achieving something together—for in that process, our individual resonances are amplified and merge into a shared harmony.

A new gathering place

Rådhustorvet (Town Hall Square) is a new gathering place featuring a town center, housing, and cultural experiences; the town hall itself serves as a cultural venue—hosting events such as concerts once staff and politicians have gone home for the day.

Henning Larsen Architects

Middelfart Town Hall was inaugurated on September 1, 2017. The building was designed by Henning Larsen Architects with the aim of creating a transparent structure that welcomes the citizens. In addition to the 8,000 m² town hall, which accommodates 440 employees, the building houses a new town center comprising 40 residential units and 3,000 m² of retail space.
