Explore Nordborg Sø and its hilly surroundings

Nordborg Sø lies in a long, narrow tunnel valley in northern Als, surrounded by steep slopes and a varied landscape. It is the largest lake on Als and offers an appealing mix of scenery, birdwatching and history.

Follow the lakeshore, enjoy views across the water and explore the hilly terrain, with different perspectives on the landscape along the way. At the western end of the lake, Nordborg Slot stands on a small island surrounded by water.

Discover the birdlife at Nordborg Sø

Take some time to watch the birds on and around Nordborg Sø. The paths along the lakeshore offer plenty of opportunities to spot birds on the water and along the banks while enjoying views across the lake.

Birdwatching is another good reason to slow down and explore the surroundings. Bring a pair of binoculars if you would like a closer look at the birds out on the water.

Nordborg Slot on an island in the lake

At the western end of Nordborg Sø, Nordborg Slot stands on a small island surrounded by the lake. Its white buildings and red roofs are a distinctive feature of the landscape, adding a sense of history to the setting.

A fortress was first built on the island in the mid-12th century. The original structure has since disappeared, and the present buildings date from the early 20th century.

The location of Nordborg Slot is part of what makes Nordborg Sø so distinctive. Here, the hilly lakeside landscape meets centuries of history.

A lake shaped by the Ice Age

Nordborg Sø lies in a tunnel valley with steep slopes that continue beneath the water's surface. The lake reaches a depth of 8.5 metres, and the striking changes in elevation give the surrounding landscape much of its character.

The lake's long, narrow shape and surrounding slopes make it an interesting place to explore, whether you take a short walk along the water or venture further around the lake.

Walk around Nordborg Sø

To experience the lake from different perspectives, follow the approximately 7.2-kilometre walking route around Nordborg Sø.

On the southern side, the path runs close to the water, offering views across the lake and opportunities to watch the birds. On the northern side, the route takes you through higher ground, with views of the lake and surrounding fields.

The route also passes through Nordborg and Lavensby, taking you through a mix of lakeside scenery, open countryside and residential areas.
