The Northern Chalk Pit

For 70 years, Portland Cement Factory and its employees dug for chalk and chalk sludge, creating the 10-20 meter tall cliffs. Today, the lime pit is a nature area with interesting plants and animals.

Characteristic for this chalk pit is the 600 meter long and 9 meter deep lake with greenish-blue water. The light's reflection in the alkaline water rich in calcium causes the color. On the cliffs, quaking grass and parsnips grow where the earth contains lime.

Red-neck grebes and a territory demanding mute swan couple live in the area. During winter, the lake is a resting site for many birds, and around 100 Daubenton's bats hibernate in a closed mine tunnel.

If you are into fishing, it is possible to catch perch and common roach in the lime pit.

Be aware that swimming here is inadvisable!
