From Telescope to Ice Age Playground

The Observatoriet houses a range of exhibitions that make natural science tangible. In the old research buildings, you can peer through telescopes, explore planets and star systems in interactive installations, and understand the forces that have shaped the universe and our own solar system. Outside, the experience continues on the Ice Age Playground, where children can climb, dig, and play their way to an understanding of the geological processes that created the Zealand landscape. The Planet Trail leads through the forest at the scale of the solar system, and along the way you can pause and reflect on distances and magnitudes that are normally impossible to comprehend. Denmark's Only Protected Night Darkness

What makes the Observatoriet truly unique in a Danish context is the protected night darkness. The area around Brorfelde is shielded from light pollution, so when darkness falls, a starry sky opens up that very few Danes have ever seen. It is an experience that strikes deep — standing in complete silence beneath a sky packed with stars and realising just how small our corner of the universe really is. The Observatoriet offers star-gazing evenings and overnight stays in special stargazer shelters, where you can fall asleep with a view of the Milky Way. Nature and Landscape in the Zealand Alps

The hilltop location at Brorfelde gives the Observatoriet a special character. The landscape here is surprisingly hilly and dramatic — Zealand's answer to the Alps, with deep valleys, dense forests, and wide views across the western Zealand farmland. The area invites hiking and quiet walks along forest trails, and the clean air and absence of noise create a feeling of being far from civilisation — even though Holbæk is only ten minutes' drive away. On a clear day, you can see across large parts of western Zealand from the hilltop, and in the forest floor, anemones bloom in spring and mushrooms appear in autumn.

The Observatoriet is centrally located in western Zealand, within easy reach of both Holbæk and Sorø. Holbæk offers harbour life, cafés, and a historic old quarter with half-timbered houses, while Sorø beckons with its academy gardens, medieval abbey church, and beautiful lakes. Lake Maglesø lies just a few kilometres away and is one of Zealand's most beautiful bathing lakes, surrounded by ancient beech forest.
