Sabro Church

A Romanesque church from the 12th century

Sabro Church stands on a hill in the north-eastern part of Sabro, about 15 km west of Aarhus. The church dates from the 12th century and was originally built of granite blocks and limestone.

Before the 16th century, the nave was shortened towards the west. During restoration work in the 1960s, remains of the original foundation were discovered to the west of the present west gable.

Historical furnishings in Sabro Church

Inside the church, you can see, amongst other things, a Romanesque lion font and a chancel arch crucifix from the mid-17th century. During the restoration in the 1960s, traces of late Gothic frescoes were also discovered.

After the Reformation, the church changed hands several times and was, amongst other things, associated with the County of Frijsenborg. Sabro Church became a freehold parish in 1910.
