Wetland and Fjord Views North of Holbæk

Tempelkrogen is the innermost arm of Holbæk Fjord, and along its northern shore stretches a restored wetland that ranks among the most surprising natural gems in Holbæk Municipality. The trail at Tempelkrog Nord follows the edge of this low-lying landscape, where fields and meadows meet the fjord in a soft transition of reedbeds, shallow water and mudflats. It is a quiet walk where the call of lapwings replaces traffic noise from the nearby main road, and where the view constantly shifts between wide fjord panoramas and intimate glimpses into marshy thickets.

A Restored Natural Area

The wetland at Tempelkrog Nord is one of those places where you can see the results of decades of nature restoration. The area was once drained farmland, but water has been let back in to create habitats for birds, amphibians and insects. The result is a mosaic of open water, reed beds and damp meadows that attracts a rich birdlife year-round. From the trail you can hear the courtship calls of grebes in spring, and in late summer large flocks of wading birds gather on the mudflats before migrating south.

Munkholm and the Fjord Panorama

One of the trail's highlights is the view towards Munkholm, the small peninsula jutting out into Holbæk Fjord. On a clear day you can see across the fjord to Hornsherred and the forested hills on the opposite side. The light over Tempelkrogen changes dramatically with the seasons and weather — from the sharp winter light that traces every single reed stalk, to the soft summer mornings when mist hangs low over the water surface and makes the landscape resemble a Japanese ink painting. The area has drawn birdwatchers and landscape photographers for years, yet remains relatively unknown to the wider public.

Terrain and Accessibility

The trail varies in length depending on how far you choose to walk. The terrain is predominantly flat, running along farm tracks and purpose-built paths, but some stretches can be muddy in wet periods, so walking boots are a good idea from autumn through spring. The route is well suited for leisurely walks, and there is the option of combining it with other trails in the area for a longer loop. Dogs are welcome on leads along the public paths.

Nature Close to Vipperød and Holbæk

The trail starts from Hornsherredvej near Vipperød, which lies just a few kilometres north of Holbæk town. With a train station in Vipperød, the area is easily accessible by public transport, and there is parking at the trailhead. The proximity to Holbæk means you can easily combine a nature walk with a visit to town — the harbour area with its cafés and restaurants is only ten minutes away by car.

Seasonal Changes at Tempelkrogen

Tempelkrog Nord is one of those places that rewards repeat visits. Spring brings the first birdsong and greening meadows, while summer fills the air with the scent of wildflowers and the hum of dragonflies over the water. Autumn is the favourite time for many birdwatchers, when migrating birds gather in their thousands before the long journey south. Even the winter months have their charm, when hoarfrost covers the reeds and overwintering ducks and geese dominate the fjord's still water.

Experiences in the Area

The Holbæk area offers plenty beyond the walk itself. Holbæk Museum tells the story of the town's history as a trading port on the fjord, and the new harbour quarter has become a gathering point for local food experiences. To the south lies Brorfelde Observatory, which combines astronomy with nature experiences under dark skies. Naturpark Åmosen spreads out west of Tempelkrogen with one of Northern Europe's largest wetland areas and a network of hiking trails.
