During the German occupation from 1940 to 1945, it took both ingenuity and perseverance to put food on the table – in Skagen as well as in the rest of Denmark. Rationing and shortages characterised everyday life, and families often had to eat whatever was available. In Skagen, this meant seagulls, among other things, which were plentiful.

While many men were away at sea for long periods of time, it was the women of the town who were responsible for the household, the children and the family finances. They were the ones who kept everyday life running and made sure that the ration cards lasted for the whole month – in a time marked by fear, uncertainty and a town full of German soldiers.

In April, the story of housewives during the occupation in Skagen will be told through the life stories of local women. Women who themselves experienced the five dark years share their memories and experiences from a difficult but also energetic time.

Welcome to the story of the month.
The event is for paying guests of the museum.
