A manor house with medieval roots

Between Mørkøv and Undløse, roughly 15 kilometres southwest of Holbæk, Torbenfeldt Slot stands as one of the most impressive manor house complexes in West Zealand. The three-winged main building in two storeys with whitewashed walls and a red tile roof sits surrounded by parkland, forest and open fields in a landscape that has belonged to noble families since the 14th century. From noble estate to royal possession

Torbenfeldt likely takes its name from Torben Jensen, who was related to the famous Marsk Stig Andersen Hvide. Throughout the Middle Ages, the estate passed between prominent noble families such as Moltke, Gøye and Brahe, with each change of ownership leaving its mark on buildings and land. In 1668, King Frederik III took possession of the manor and renamed it Frydendal — a name it bore for nearly 240 years. The king's son, Prince Jørgen, inherited the estate and brought it into European high politics when he married the future Queen Anne of England. The Treschow family and the return to the original name

Since 1873, the Treschow family has owned the estate. In 1906, the family decided to restore the manor's original name — Torbenfeldt — thereby marking their respect for the place's medieval roots. Under Treschow ownership, the estate has maintained its character as an active farming and forestry operation, and the family has carried out thorough restorations ensuring that the main building and surrounding structures continue to reflect different eras of architectural expression and restoration ideals.

The three-winged main building contains elements from the Middle Ages but acquired its current appearance around the year 1900. The whitewashed walls and red tile roof give the building a classic Danish manor house character, while the symmetrical two-storey construction signals solidity and tradition. In front of the main building opens a courtyard that frames the arrival at the estate, and behind the buildings the park spreads out with old trees and pathways.
