Vadestedet has roots that stretch back to before the founding of Aarhus in the 700s. The name comes from a place where you could easily wade through the river due to its firm bank and narrow passage. The street Immervad, which marks the western end of the ford, got its name because the ford was always navigable, regardless of water level and season. This historic ford also gave the town its original name, Aros, which means ‘the town at the mouth of the river.’ The ford has thus always played a central role as a meeting place in Aarhus.
