The Butterflies in the lake
In Munke Mose, you can spot a colourful group of butterflies hovering above the water in the small lake. The inspiration comes from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale Thumbelina, in which Thumbelina escapes from the toad and floats away on a water lily leaf pulled by a butterfly. The colourful butterflies in Munke Mose are part of the nearby playground.
A small part of Thumbelina’s world
The butterflies make even more sense when you see them as part of the playground by the lake. Inspired by Thumbelina, the playground features oversized elements from nature, including water lily leaves, birds and butterflies.
In this way, part of the fairy tale has been brought to life in Munke Mose, where children can play among elements that are much larger than they would be in real life. It fits the story of Thumbelina perfectly: she is so tiny that flowers, leaves and animals become an entire world around her.
Hans Christian Andersen in the heart of the park
The butterflies are not a standalone work of art, but part of the overall setting around the playground and the lake. Here, inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen blends naturally into the green surroundings of the park, whether or not you already know the story.
For children, the butterflies and oversized natural elements are first and foremost part of the play experience. For adults and others who know Thumbelina, they add another layer to discover.
