Holbaek becomes Zealand's Easter Capital

Every spring, the cosy harbour town of Holbaek transforms into an Easter celebration for the whole family. Easter Festival Holbaek brings together local players, cultural institutions and dedicated volunteers with a shared ambition: to make this historic fjord town the natural gathering point for Easter holidays on Zealand.

The festival originates from the art and cultural centre Aeglageret on Ahlgade, home to Denmark's only egg museum. From here, activities spread along the pedestrian street, down to the harbour and onward to museums and shops throughout the town centre. This is the kind of event where you can simply show up and let yourself be swept along – no tickets, no strict timetable, just a whole week filled with Easter spirit.

Creative workshops and family activities

For families with children, Easter Festival Holbaek is a treasure trove of experiences. Creative workshops invite you to build, paint and create – from porcelain painting at Holbaek Museum to whimsical Easter figures made from egg cartons and recycled materials. The children's ticket provides access to a string of activities at the town's shops, and the youngest visitors can hop aboard the Easter train, which runs its fixed route through the streets with stops at the town square, Ahlgade and Aeglageret.

Holbaek Library opens its doors for family fun with read-aloud sessions and board games, while the Easter egg games at Holbaek Museum challenge the whole family with four entertaining stations. It is the kind of programme where adults and children find their own favourites – and where you can easily spend several days without running out of things to do.

A fjord town with spring atmosphere

Holbaek sits beautifully on the Holbaek Fjord, and the Easter festival coincides with the moment the town truly awakens after winter. The harbour area offers fresh fjord air and views across to Tuse Naes on the other side of the water, while the cobbled lanes of the old town centre provide the backdrop for Easter-decorated shop windows and fragrant bakeries.

The town is easily accessible from Copenhagen – less than an hour's drive along the motorway – and the rail connection makes it simple to plan a day trip or a couple of nights' stay. Holbaek is large enough to have a varied selection of dining and accommodation options, yet small enough that you quickly find your way around and feel at home.

A local community celebrates Easter

What makes Easter Festival Holbaek special is its local roots. The festival is run by Holbaek Byforum and Destination Sjaelland in cooperation with the town's traders, museums and associations. This means the experiences feel genuine – it is not an imported event but something that grows from the town's own cultural life and community.

Each year the programme develops with new initiatives, but the core remains the same: bringing families and locals together around a cosy, creative and affordable Easter holiday. Many guests return year after year and have made the festival a fixed part of their own Easter traditions.

Experiences nearby

Holbaek Municipality offers plenty of experiences beyond the festival itself. Tuse Naes with its farm shops and orchards lies just a few kilometres from town, and Brorfelde Observatory offers stargazing and nature walks for the whole family. Along the fjord, paths stretch out into the open landscape, and Holbaek Harbour is a natural starting point for a walk with a view.
