A clearing in the heart of Søholm Forest

Søholm Shelters are located in a peaceful clearing in Søholm Forest, arranged in a semi-circle that offers both shelter and a sense of togetherness. Here you will find three solid timber shelters with space for up to 12 people in total, gathered around a large communal fire hut. The forest is privately owned but open to pedestrians, and the area is characterised by tranquillity and natural screening. The shelters are suitable both for simple hiking overnights and for smaller groups who wish to enjoy time together in nature. The setting makes it easy to retreat and enjoy the evening around the campfire.

Nature, campfires and a forest with history

The forest surrounding the shelter site is part of a special afforestation project, where only trees and shrubs native to Denmark around 5,000 years ago have been planted. This creates the experience of an original Danish forest with rich plant and wildlife. At the shelter site there is a campfire area, tables and benches, as well as a composting toilet, ensuring a practical and comfortable stay without compromising the nature experience. Firewood is included in the overnight fee and is available on site. The setting is ideal for slow mornings, meals cooked over an open fire and calm evenings beneath the tree canopy.

Practical and easily accessible accommodation

Søholm Shelters are located close to Nellikevej between Vester Såby and Kirke Såby and are easy to find. Parking is available approximately 200 metres from the shelter site, from where a path leads directly into the forest. Shops are only 500 metres away, but drinking water must be brought along. Overnight stays require advance booking and payment, ensuring peace and space for everyone. The shelters are intended for quiet overnight stays, and the area is also used during weekdays for nature and outdoor activities.

Routes and experiences nearby

The area around Søholm Shelters is ideal for both hikers and cyclists, as several well-known routes pass very close to the site. This makes the shelters a suitable stopover or overnight location on longer journeys through the varied landscapes of central Zealand. Open farmland, small villages and fjord-side stretches are combined with calm woodland sections.

  • Gudernes Stræde (walking and cycling route): The route passes close by along Nellikevej and connects the Lejre and Roskilde areas. It takes you through a historic cultural landscape with burial mounds, churches and wide open views.
  • The Munkevejen, cycle route 88: An international pilgrimage and cultural route that runs directly past the shelter site. It follows ancient routes and offers a peaceful cycling experience through villages and countryside.
  • The Fjord Trail, regional route 40: Approximately 1 km from Søholm Shelters lies the Fjord Trail, offering beautiful stretches along Roskilde Fjord. The route is suitable for both walkers and cyclists and provides access to viewpoints, coastal nature and small harbour environments.
  • The Ice Age Route (cycle route): About 1 km from the site near Kirke Såby. This route runs through a landscape shaped by the Ice Age, with hills, tunnel valleys and striking viewpoints, creating a distinctive cycling experience.

Søholm Shelters are therefore an excellent stop for those wishing to combine an active holiday with a peaceful overnight stay in nature.
