Vågehøj and Radar Bunker

A hilltop with panoramic views and Cold War history on Røsnæs

Vågehøj rises prominently in the rolling landscape of Røsnæs, the long peninsula west of Kalundborg. At nearly 80 metres above sea level, the hill is one of the most impressive viewpoints in all of West Zealand and has served for millennia as a natural landmark for seafarers in Kalundborg Fjord and the western Great Belt.

The landscape and nature around Vågehøj

The Røsnæs peninsula was shaped by the Ice Age, and Vågehøj forms part of the elongated moraine landscape stretching from Kalundborg to the outermost tip of the peninsula. The terrain around the hill is undulating with open grasslands, scattered hawthorn thickets and wild flower meadows that change character with the seasons. From the summit, a panorama unfolds that on clear days reaches from Samsø to the north across the Great Belt to Funen in the west and Musholm Bay to the south.

The area is part of the Natura 2000 network and harbours a remarkable flora and fauna. Orchids bloom on the calcareous grasslands, and rare butterfly species thrive in the undisturbed nature. Røsnæs is also renowned as one of Denmark's best locations for observing raptor migration in spring, when thousands of buzzards, honey buzzards and sparrowhawks pass the peninsula on their way north.

The radar bunker — a Cold War relic

At the foot of Vågehøj you will find the remains of a radar station from the Cold War. The installation was built in the 1950s as part of NATO's air surveillance network, designed to provide early warning of potential attacks from the Eastern Bloc. The strategic position of Røsnæs at the entrance to the Great Belt made the site ideal for monitoring both air and maritime traffic.

The bunker is abandoned today, but the concrete structures still stand visibly in the landscape, bearing witness to an era when West Zealand played an important role in Western defence cooperation. For history enthusiasts, the installation offers a tangible insight into Denmark's Cold War military infrastructure, and the somewhat sombre atmosphere stands in sharp contrast to the open, peaceful natural landscape surrounding the hill.

Walking routes and accessibility

Vågehøj is most easily reached from the car park at Røsnæs Lighthouse, from where marked paths lead through the grasslands and up to the ridge. The walk is moderate with some steep sections, but the reward in the form of the summit views makes every effort worthwhile. Along the way you pass both the old radar station and several of the peninsula's characteristic stone walls and grassland areas.

Røsnæs is altogether a paradise for walkers. The 12-kilometre Røsnæsstien trail connects the highlights of the peninsula from Kalundborg in the east to the lighthouse at the tip, and Vågehøj is a natural stop along the way. Do bring binoculars — both for the birdlife and to enjoy the magnificent views across the Danish waters.

Røsnæs offers far more than Vågehøj alone. At the outermost point of the peninsula stands Røsnæs Lighthouse with its associated nature centre, where you can learn about the geology and wildlife of the peninsula. The town of Kalundborg with its iconic five-towered Church of Our Lady lies just a short drive to the east, and on the way you pass the historic Røsnæsgård estate.
